When John Speed wanted to grow his IT Support & Development business without it affecting his lifestyle, he asked Denise Molloy to assist him.
“The company was a year old and I wanted to develop it without hugely increasing the number of hours I worked but I didn’t know where to start.”
Denise helped John with his marketing strategy, including defining his USP and how to gear his products, as well as starting the process of employing staff. Now, two years later, John has a team of people working for him and enjoys a much clearer idea of where the company is going and more importantly, what he has to do to get it there.
“Denise provided the tools,” John explained. “I knew what had to be done but what Denise did was manage to crystallise it and more importantly prioritise it. She showed me what needed to be done in what order to make sure my goals were realised.”
John says that as a result his time is much more productive as he’s learned what he needed to find time to do to have long term improvement in the business – he says he’s stopped fire fighting urgent tasks and focuses on the important ones instead. “I worry about the business a lot less too.”
John made the decision to continue seeing Denise on a monthly basis and says that having a constant, objective eye has been invaluable in growing his business and that her costs are simply part of his budget now. “Denise is very good at getting you to set goals and more importantly, working out if you don’t meet them, why not.”
The scope of what Denise has been involved in has changed during those two years. For example, after assisting John in recruiting staff, she focussed on helping him with their ongoing management such as developing an appraisal system.
John’s business is still growing and has no plans to slow down. He also knows how to make sure it doesn’t. “I never thought about my business before, I just did it and everything else took precedence over planning. Denise showed me that I had to take regular time out to do this and I haven’t looked back since.”
